Students travel during the summer to visit family and friends, scout out cities they may move to, and just for the fun of it. When the heat is on though, summer travel can be a hectic experience for everyone involved.
It takes the right prep and a positive mindset to avoid confusion as well as the temperatures, long lines, and busy crowds from getting to you. Use these tips to help keep your summer trips as carefree and enjoyable as possible.
Plan Summer travel is often spontaneous. When a new idea hits, don’t just picture it in your head. Harness your initial enthusiasm and begin researching and consulting others to make it something that is easily doable and enjoyable for everyone.
Pack light Sticking to the one suitcase maximum is an easy way to help ensure smooth sailing for your trip. There’s less to keep track of, you can bypass baggage fees, and moving from place to place is as easy as sunbathing. Pack versatile clothes and call friends ahead of time to see what amenities they can provide (and maybe buy them lunch to show your appreciation).
Delete expectations Summer is the one time that expectations aren’t heaped on top of you. Don’t feel that you need to replace those expectations by putting pressure on your summer instead. Head into summer travel with the intent only to relax and take in a different scenery; you’ll avoid vacation stress and actually be more likely to have a memorable experience.
Stay up to date Check the weather, see if local events are occurring that might cause crowds, and read sites that review current restaurants and have the scoop on the best local values. Being knowledgeable about the “now” of a new area can help you stay flexible and spend less.
Take a social media hiatus As tempting as it is to upload those vacation photos as you take them, or fill your friends in on your location as you drive, your Facebook and Twitter will still be there when you’re back. Do yourself a favor and go off the grid for a bit to help you experience your destination for all its glory.
