Probably the only thing more unique than students is their family. It can consist of dozens of relatives, or just a few special people. Many students even have families of their own.
The point is, while family members understand your need to focus while you’re in school, it’s hard to know your role in dealing with all of them while in college. Doing these 5 things can help your relationship with them:
Spend quality time Make sure that when you do reach out to family they’re not expecting you to ask them to take you out shopping or send you some cash. While you don’t need to treat someone every time, if the time you spend with family is something thoughtful on your part (going to a park you all like or having a traditional family meal) you’ll all get more out of the few times you get together.
Get creative In the age of technology it isn’t too hard to find a fun way to keep up with family. You can send a short video of your place after decorating or moving, create a small photo album on a site like Flickr to share, or even organize video hangouts for multiple family members.
Use your down time Because college can be so busy, using your down time to spend time with family or to get in touch with them is a win/win situation. Talking with loved ones can be the best stress-relief out there and, in replacing a half-hour of TV with a good chat you’re helping make someone else’s day too.
