Unlike Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, final exams are nothing to gamble on. Instead, a much better approach is one that keeps your confidence high by accounting for several scenarios and taking advantage of what you already know.
Keep your study program smart and well planned this finals season so that when the gates open, you’re playing with house money.
Cash in on the safe bets
Like in racing, there are often one or two safe bets you can point to in your exams. Whether it’s a list of vocab words or something you’ve spent a lot of time on in class, first master the things you know will be on the test, and that you know you’re fairly good at. It’ll increase your exam floor greatly and give you the confidence to tackle the hairier issues.
Identify the dark horses
There’s the stuff you know will be on the test, and then there’s the stuff you’re just not sure about – the dark horses, if you will. But rather than being so overwhelmed with the thought of all (or none) of this marginal material being on the test, plan for a few hours to briefly get acquainted with these topics.
Wear many hats
The best way to ensure your finals success is to take a well-balanced study approach. Plan your study sessions around rotating subjects, and stay on your feet within subjects so that you don’t get too caught up on one class or one chapter and end up forgetting about another.
Eliminate the stretch run
When it comes to study programs, we all know they don’t always go exactly as planned. That’s okay. Account for obstacles by planning to be done with studying a good while before the actual test. This will lessen the need to cram and allow for you to be more flexible if you do run into speed bumps.
Look for tips
Additional pointers are always a bonus. Get different perspectives on exams by attending study groups, asking your professor questions, and planning for some collaborative study sessions with one or two peers, if possible.
