Everyone knows the classics of stress-relief – yoga, a massage, a walk, a music-up, windows-down drive; but sometimes the norm has to be shaken up. Maybe there’s no time for the go-to outlets anymore, or maybe they’ve run their course for you. In honor of National Stress Awareness Month, we offer stress relief with these uncommon, but effective, releases.
Laundry
For many, doing laundry is a soothing activity. A sense of relaxation can come from folding warm clothes, the hum of a drier, and even the “aromatherapy” of fresh clothes. If nothing else, you’ll have piece of mind for getting a chore out of the way and sleeping in clean sheets.
Instead of watching television or playing video games, which can cause more stress for some, break out the board games. Board games are a simple and enjoyable release and include a variety of options for any kind of stress. Card games like poker or blackjack are an easy way to relieve stress with friends while keeping the mind jogging.
Green tea
Green tea can counter the many ill effects of stress. It strengthens the immune system as well as the heart and relaxes the mood. It can even hydrate the body despite the caffeine, so drink it hot or cold throughout the summer.
Music
Go through your music collection and make a playlist of songs that always clear your mind, and a few that motivate you. Turn it on whenever you feel like you have too much on your plate or are crunched for time; even listen to it while you’re working. For many, putting playlists together alone can be a satisfying escape.
Photographs
Looking through old albums or organizing your computer’s picture collection can be rewarding and relaxing experience. The nostalgia of reliving the past can provide a welcome distraction for your mind and may even give you a little extra push to overtake your stressors.
